A great player and an even greater man. That's how Frank Lampard remembered fellow Chelsea legend Ray Wilkins when the 61-year-old died nearly two years ago.
His career was characterised by maturity and dignity, representing a host of major clubs over 24 years and always displaying intelligence, drive and no little technical ability.
Chelsea: 1973-79
Having served as an apprentice at Stamford Bridge, Wilkins made his debut for his boyhood club at just 17. A year later, his quality and leadership saw him awarded the captaincy.
Manchester United: 1979-84
When Chelsea were relegated, it became inevitable that top-flight clubs would pounce. So it proved as he signed for Manchester United in August 1979. He made 160 appearances at Old Trafford, winning supporters' player of the year in 1984. He also wore some sensational adidas shirts during his time as a Red Devil.
AC Milan: 1984-87
The Rossoneri signed Wilkins for £1.5 million, adding fellow Englishman Mark Hately soon after. In his first season, Wilkins - always popular at the San Siro - was instrumental as Milan beat city rivals Inter.
PSG: 1987
A disappointing spell in Paris followed, where he failed to establish himself at the Parc des Princes. The kit he wore, complete with trademark giant sponsor, was a highlight though.
Rangers: 1987-89
Wilkins became a key part of a successful side at Ibrox, winning a league title and endearing himself to the faithful with a thunderous volley in a 5-1 demolition of Celtic. The Gers wore a glorious Umbro shirt during his time in Scotland, complete with subtle check and granddad collar.
QPR: 1989-94
With his family keen to return to London, Wilkins swapped one Rangers for another, signing for QPR and becoming a mainstay of a quality side at Loftus Road.
Crystal Palace: 1994
Wilkins joined Palace as player-coach but would make only one appearance for the South Londoners after breaking his foot on his debut.
QPR: 1994-96
He rejoined QPR as player-manager following the departure of Gerry Francis, steering the club to eighth in the Premier League. However, the following season, with Les Ferdinand sold, QPR were relegated.
His final season: 1996/97
Wilkins played for four different clubs in the 1996/97 season - once for Wycombe Wanderers before moving to Hibernian for a 16-game stint. Toward the end of the season he played three times for Millwall in the Second Division and, finally, three Third Division games for Leyton Orient before retiring.
England: 1976-86
Wilkins represented England 84 times during a ten-year international career, captaining the team on ten occasions and playing in two World Cups.
A talented footballer, a glittering career and a footballing gentleman. We miss you, Ray.
