A tribute to the connection between the Club and its fan members, the bespoke jersey represents their names in an abstract graphic, within the Los Leones iconic racing red and white vertical stripes.
The home strip also incorporates a woven collar insert complete with Basque flag detailing. Another new addition is a woven crest, reversed with a badge bearing the lion of San Mames - visible only on the inside.
The elite jersey has been developed using innovative Aerojaq technology, that helps keep players fresh and dry from the first to final whistle. A jacquard ventilation system is also included to promote optimum comfort on the elite jersey.
Now for some science:
Black knitted shorts in an athletic fit help to increase stability and complete the look. Construction and shaping to the hem of the shorts is designed to help increase stretch and rotational / lateral movement.
Engineered with cushioning areas, the accompanying socks feature a vertical band and zonal polypropylene footbed to help release moisture away from the foot. Ventilation is provided via mesh jacquard structures.
The 2020/21 strips are part of New Balance Football’s ‘Born of the People’ (Herritik sortu zinalako) campaign for Athletic Club, in recognition of the Club’s unique identity and signifying one Club belonging to the fans.
“Herritik sortu zinalako” are words that come from the team anthem, translated as “because you (the Club, the team) are created from the Country (the people).
Club Captain Iker Muniain said, “I really like the unique detail on the jersey, while also including traditional details that show we are a Club that represents unity. Wearing this kit will mean a lot to the players and our supporters”.
