Santos FC was founded in 1912. One of the club's most notable players and arguably the greatest player of all time, Pelé, played for Santos from 1956 to 1974. Santos plays its home matches at Estádio Urbano Caldeira, which is also known as “Vila Belmiro” or “Pelé” and can hold up to 16,068 spectators. The team is nicknamed "Peixe" which means "Fish" as Santos is a port city and the fish is part of the city's culture. Santos FC's biggest rivals are Corinthians and Palmeiras. The rivalry between Santos and Corinthians is considered one of the biggest in Brazilian football and is known as "Clássico Alvinegro" or "Black and White Classic". Both teams are based in the city of São Paulo and have a long history of rivalry. The two teams have played each other over 200 times and both teams have a similar number of wins. The reason for these rivalries is not only because of their proximity and the fact that they are both from São Paulo but also because of the historical and cultural background and the fact that both teams have a similar number of trophies and they are considered among the most successful teams in Brazil.
Recent star players include Neymar, Robinho, and Diego, all of whom helped Santos win the Campeonato Paulista in 2010 and 2011. The current manager is Odair Hellmann, who was appointed in November 2022.
