GIRLFANS UNTOLD

GIRLFANS UNTOLD

GirlFans launches exhibition at the Museum of Liverpool today, calling all female supporters to share their experiences as fans.

In 2013, aware of the growing numbers of females attending Premier League football matches and a severe lack of female visibility in football culture, Jacqui McAssey created GIRLFANS - a photo-fanzine and project highlighting modern female fan-culture. Since then she has photographed the supporters of Liverpool FC, Everton FC, Manchester City FC, Celtic FC and Tranmere Rovers FC and has presented the work at the The Whitworth Gallery, Open Eye Gallery and the National Football Museum. (Celtic and Tranmere will be published later in 2019.)

Sister publication, GIRLFANS UNTOLD is a selection of beautifully told stories of how a generation of pioneering women - the overlooked advocates of the game, have lived their lives as football fans, from girlhood to retirement. The publication is a collection of memories, unfiltered photographs and reflections of their relationships with people and places, curated by Jacqui McAssey.

“My Mum (65 years old) and I set off from Lime Street to travel by train and ferry to Rotterdam for the Final. We slept on benches, with our heads on tables and finally on the grass outside the Feyenoord Stadium.” Elaine, Everton FC, European Cup Winner’s Cup Final, 1985.

“I was wearing a football shirt and a cap. I had red shoes on and white pants. I can’t remember where I got the football shirt. It might have been from the ground because there weren’t many places that sold shirts in those days.” Anne, Liverpool FC, European Cup Final, 1984.

GIRLFANS UNTOLD launches at Museum of Liverpool on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th March, with a call to action, for more female supporters to share their own experiences as female fans on Saturday 23rd March 2019 - also taking place at Museum of Liverpool. A selection of vintage shirts from Box2Box Football will be on display on the 8th and 9th March.

GIRLFANS UNTOLD is supported by Liverpool John Moores University and designed by Studio Dotto.

The publication will be available on 25th March 2019 from www.girlfans.co.uk
