Man Utd 1990 Away Shirt - Accomplishments, History & Players to Wear it

Man Utd 1990 Away Shirt - Accomplishments, History & Players to Wear it

Sit back, relax and cast your mind back to the year 1990. Maggie Thatcher resigns, Germany is reunified and Manchester United launch a football shirt that is so spectacular, they wear it for two seasons running.

This retro Manchester United away shirt sports one of the most recognisable prints in football history... but 1990-1992 wasn't entirely straightforward for the club. Despite their outrageously good away kit, United didn't quite hit the imperious form of later 90's years.

Come with us on a trip down memory lane as we explore the highs & lows and take a closer look at that stonking shirt...

Manchester United and Dominating the 1990's

The 1990's were an iconic decade for English football and no club dominated the top flight quite like Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United.

Across that ten year period, The Red Devils transformed from a Division 1 stalwart into a European and domestic monster, winning 12 major trophies - including:

  • 5 Premier Leagues
  • 1 Champions League
  • 4 FA Cups
  • 1 League Cup
  • 1 European Cup Winners' Cup

But 1990-1992 was before those glory days had really kicked in, with the squad enjoying mixed success.

What did Manchester United win in 1990-1992?

Back in 1990, United hadn't quite reached their thundering best. It was the '98 treble that brought about Sir Alex Ferguson's knighthood and whilst the '90/'91 & 91'/'92 seasons were far from failure; United only managed to secure the European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup.

They failed to seal a league title over those four years.

A special mention to Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs who broke into the first team in 1990. This beauty was his first away shirt for the club. He was a spring chicken, making his first team debut at 17 years of age.

Dubbed as the next George Best, Giggsy will forever be an Old Trafford legend. He signed his first Manchester United professional contract in late November of 1990 and immediately broke into the first team, notching two league appearances and bagging a goal for his efforts. Classic Giggsy.

Rediscover 1990 with the Manchester United away shirt

This is one of those special football shirts. And despite United not hauling the trophies as they did in later years, it's a memorable era with Bruce, Ince and Hughes all featuring.

This was a time when football shirts were made to last, that's why Manchester United kept this one in rotation for two seasons. When United fans pull on this iconic blue and white adidas originals pattern of 1990, they're bringing back to life the early days of Sir Alex's football empire.
