Hot on the heels of last month’s National League South title triumph, Westcountry trailblazers Torquay United today continue the celebratory mood with the release of a special edition 120th anniversary shirt.
While the Gulls still have a few divisions to go before they’re rubbing shoulders with the game’s biggest names on the pitch, the new limited edition jersey firmly puts them among the elite when it comes to style.
Inspired by Swedish champions AIK’s recent forays into heritage-focused apparel, the shirt takes its cues from United’s black and white kits of the 1930s, featuring a predominantly black design, with a gold accent colour adding a touch of class to the club crest, Nike Swoosh, and commemorative “1899” numbering on front.
A closer look at the new minimalist version of the Gulls’ famous badge reveals the anniversary years on either side – 1899 on the left, 2019 on the right – while the larger numbering in what would normally be the sponsor’s spot is styled to resemble the traditional curly font seen on the classic 67-68 shirt.
Torquay United were formed in 1899 by a group of students from the town’s college, who, upon graduating, wanted to ensure they were able to continue playing together. In the 120 years since, the Gulls have developed a reputation as one of the most iconic coastal clubs in English football, with a dedicated away following who regularly make some of the longest round trips in the country to support their team.
