World in motion: Mundial JPN x Umbro Japan

It’s Chris Waddle and Terry Butcher dancing in Bologna after Platty’s volley had beaten Belgium. It’s Gazza’s tears and Gary Lineker telling Bobby to ‘have a word with him’. It’s Nessun Dorma and World in Motion and beautiful heartbreak and that hot summer that felt like it would never end.

Italia ’90 was the best. Not because of the football, which was generally quite terrible, but because of the stories and the romance and the kits and the music and the feeling that this was the start of something special, magical.

Now Mundial JPN and Umbro Japan have got together to pay homage to England and the greatest World Cup ever – and the results are really, really gorgeous.

Featuring the embroidered Sporting Club de Mundial crest and the classic double diamond Umbro logo, the shirt – which comes in white and light blue – features the wavy Mundial ‘M’ graphic throughout.

There’s the Japanese flag on the reverse and Umbro’s early 90s trademark collar and sleeve detail.

The release coincides with the drop of the Mundial JPN magazine – packed with all the lovely stuff you’ll find in the UK version but with an eastern twist.

Getting hold of the shirt will be tricky – it’s being released in very limited numbers, and is initially only available at Mundial JPN events this month. The next opportunity will be at Journal Standard in Omotesando, Tokyo on June 15.

For those who can’t quite justify a trip to Japan, some will be available via Mundialmag.com in mid June. Keep an eye on their social channels for details over the next few weeks.
