Manchester United, Arsenal and the shirts of the Premier League era

English football produced more than its fair share of classics during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Manchester United had Sharp, Umbro collars, Cantona number 7 and eventually that famous 1998/99 treble season.

Arsenal had the Bruised Banana, JVC and a run of adidas and Nike kits that now define several generations of supporters.

Liverpool and Carlsberg became almost impossible to separate. Newcastle somehow made a beer logo shaped like a blue star look completely natural on black and white stripes.

Serie A was ridiculous. In a good way.

Pick almost any major Italian club from the 1990s and there’s a classic shirt attached to it.

Milan had Maldini, Baresi and Van Basten.

Juventus had Baggio, Del Piero and Zidane.

adidas, Nike, Umbro and the brands behind the classics

Certain manufacturers seem permanently attached to certain eras.

An old adidas football shirt might bring to mind Three Stripes, a Trefoil or the oversized Equipment logo of the early 90s.

Nike football shirts became part of a new visual language towards the end of that decade — Brazil, Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter and a generation of players who turned the Swoosh into a football staple.

Umbro gave English football some of its best collars and patterns. Kappa made football shirts look almost impossibly stylish. Lotto and Diadora gave Serie A its own identity.

Those manufacturers weren’t just putting logos on shirts.

Classic doesn't necessarily mean rare

Some of football’s greatest shirts were sold in huge numbers.

That doesn't stop them being classics.

A shirt becomes classic because of its design, history or cultural impact — not simply because only twelve people own one.

Rarity is a different thing.

Unusual third shirts, short-lived sponsors, match-issued pieces, goalkeeper kits and obscure club designs can be considerably harder to find than famous home shirts.
