Serie A did vintage football differently

There was a period when Italian football seemed to have everything.

The best players. The best teams. And, quite possibly, the best shirts.

Maldini and Baresi at Milan. Ronaldo at Inter. Batistuta in purple. Zidane at Juventus. Crespo at Parma. Nesta leading Lazio.

The kits were just as good.

English football had its own golden era of kit design.

Manchester United in Umbro. Arsenal in adidas and Nike. Newcastle with the Brown Ale star sitting proudly across those black-and-white stripes. Liverpool and Carlsberg becoming virtually inseparable.

Manufacturers leave fingerprints on an era.

An old adidas football shirt might mean a Trefoil, Equipment branding or Three Stripes running all the way down an oversized sleeve.

A vintage Nike football shirt could take you from Brazil in the late 90s to Barcelona, Arsenal or Inter during the 2000s.

Then you've got Umbro diamonds, Kappa sleeves, Lotto logos, Diadora templates and dozens of manufacturers that disappeared before anyone thought to call their shirts vintage.

Those details matter.

They're part of what makes each era look like itself.

What makes a football shirt genuinely vintage?

Simple: it was made during the original period in which that design was used.

A vintage shirt is not the same as a modern recreation.

Official reissue football shirts can be a way to get your hands on an official classic designs that can be worn with less worry.

Original vintage shirts have their own story. Different labels. Different materials. Different construction. Sometimes different sizing altogether.

They're finite too.

Nobody is making another batch of original 1995 shirts.

Once they're gone, they're gone.

Rare shirts, match shirts and the genuinely unusual stuff

Not every vintage shirt was produced in huge numbers.

Third kits, goalkeeper shirts, lower-league designs, unusual sponsor variations and player-issued pieces can be considerably harder to find than standard home shirts.

Then there are match-worn and match-issued shirts, where provenance and player-specific details take things into another part of collecting entirely.

Why authenticity matters

The rise in vintage football shirts has unfortunately brought a rise in fakes too.

Some are easy to spot.

Others aren't.

Every original vintage football shirt sold by Cult Kits is checked before listing, looking at details such as labels, product codes, fabrics, construction, badges, sponsors and period-specific features.

We don't sell counterfeit shirts as vintage. And if a product is an official reissue rather than an original, we'll say so.

The terrace was only the beginning.

Vintage kits now appear at festivals, gigs, in streetwear and anywhere else people have realised that a 1990s football shirt often looks better than most things designed specifically as fashion.
