Are striped football shirts the best? Maybe. They lend themselves beautifully to a soccer jersey, radiating a sense of romance and nostalgia.

Anyway, before we get too misty-eyed, we’ve gone back through the archives to pick ten of our favourite ever striped shirts.

10 – Gremio x Kappa, 2001

Gremio have had some gorgeous shirts. Their current relationship with Umbro has yielded some absolute beauties but we reckon their early noughties Kappa jersey is their greatest ever.

9 – Scotland x Umbro, 1993

Salmon and purple stripes? What were you thinking, Umbro? Come on, it was the 90s! A decade when anything was possible. Even this. And you know what? We like it. A lot. According to the Scottish FA, the colourway pays homage to the time Scotland briefly wore the primrose and pink racing silk colours of Lord Rosebery earlier this century.

8 – Man Utd x adidas, 2023

A recent shirt for the list. This one has divided opinion but we reckon it might just be a future classic. And it’s even better in long-sleeve.

7 – Newcastle x adidas, 1995

Might this be the most British shirt of all time? We think so. Might also be one of the greatest Premier League shirts ever, too. The Newcastle Brown Ale sponsor is absolute eye candy here, while the grandad collar and fat stripes combine to make this extremely special.

6 – AC Milan x adidas, 1999/2000

A really lovely shirt, this, released to celebrate the Rossoneri’s centenary. The thinner stripes, unfussy design and big flappy collar combine to make this one of their finest-ever jerseys.

5 – Inter x Umbro, 1994/95

There obviously had to be an Inter shirt in this list and we think this mid-90s Umbro classic is the one. Classier then a Nicola Berti through ball.

4 – Sao Paolo x adidas, 2021

A very elegant away shirt for the Brazilian giants, the addition of the thinner white stripes to separate the black and red makes this bad boy pop.

3 – Juventus x Kappa, 1996

A classic Bianconeri shirt, which is taken to the next level by that Sony MiniDisc sponsor. Absolutely iconic.

2 – Barcelona x Kappa, 1996/97

Helped by the fact that Ronaldo wore it but a genuinely beautiful shirt in its own right. The Kappa sleeve detailing is peak 90s, while the recurring Barca print that runs down each stripe is a lovely touch.

1 – PSG x Nike, 1993/94

Look at it. Just look at it. The massive sponsors (most notably that arching Commodore typeface), the Nike Futura logo, the white collar, the stripes’ ripple effect… this one has it all. Magnifique.
