The Top Lionel Messi Football Shirts Of All Time

The Top Lionel Messi Football Shirts Of All Time - Cult Kits is the home of authentic vintage football shirts

Few players have a shirt history quite like Lionel Messi.

Barcelona stripes. Argentina blue and white. A brief, surreal spell in Paris.

Across more than two decades at the top, Messi has worn kits tied to Champions League finals, Ballon d’Or seasons, World Cup heartbreak and, eventually, the night he lifted football’s biggest prize.

Some shirts are remembered because they looked great. Others because of what happened in them.

With Messi, you usually get both.

Here are some of the most iconic shirts from his career.

Barcelona 2008/09 Home Shirt (Nike)

This is one of the shirts that changed everything.

Barcelona’s 2008/09 home kit brought back the classic half-and-half red and blue design, but its place in football history comes from the team that wore it. Under Pep Guardiola, Barça swept aside almost everyone in front of them and completed a historic treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League.

Messi was right at the centre of it.

He scored 38 goals in all competitions and finished the season with one of the defining images of his early career: somehow rising between Manchester United defenders to head home Barcelona’s second goal in the Champions League final in Rome.

A small player. A huge header.

This was the season Messi stopped being football’s most exciting young talent and became its new benchmark.

Argentina 2014 World Cup Home Shirt (Adidas)

For a long time, this was the Argentina shirt that defined Messi’s international career.

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil saw him carry Argentina all the way to the final, scoring four goals during the group stage before captaining the side through a tense knockout run.

The shirt itself kept things classic: Argentina’s famous sky-blue and white stripes, black Adidas detailing and very little fuss.

Then came the final in Rio.

Argentina pushed Germany deep into extra time before Mario Götze’s late winner ended the dream. Messi walked away with the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, but the image of him passing the World Cup trophy after the final became one of the hardest moments of his career.

Eight years later, the story would look very different.

Barcelona 2010/11 Home Shirt (Nike)

There are great teams, and then there’s Barcelona 2010/11.

For many fans, this was Guardiola’s side at its absolute peak. Xavi and Iniesta controlled games. Busquets made everything look easy. Pedro and David Villa stretched defences. And Messi operated somewhere between centre-forward and complete chaos.

The Nike shirt matched the era perfectly. Thin red and blue stripes, a yellow collar and UNICEF across the chest. Simple. Instantly recognisable.

Messi scored 53 goals in all competitions that season, including the decisive second goal against Manchester United in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Barcelona won 3-1.

It wasn’t just the result that stuck. It was the performance. Messi and Barça made one of Europe’s best teams look powerless.

That shirt will always be attached to one of the finest club sides football has seen.

Argentina 2022 World Cup Home Shirt (Adidas)

This is the one.

If there was one prize left for Messi to chase, it was the World Cup. Qatar 2022 finally completed the set.

Argentina’s Adidas home shirt stayed close to tradition with clean sky-blue and white stripes, black trim and the national crest sitting over the heart. By the end of the tournament, it had become one of the most important shirts of Messi’s career.

He scored seven goals across the tournament, including two in an astonishing final against France, and converted his penalty in the shootout.

Then came the image everyone remembers.

Messi. World Cup in hand. Argentina shirt on. Job done.

After the disappointment of 2014 and years of arguments about his international career, there was nothing left to debate. He had taken Argentina to the top of the world.

Few modern football shirts carry more emotion than this one.

Barcelona 2014/15 Home Shirt (Nike)

Messi had already won almost everything by 2014/15.

Then Barcelona built another monster.

Alongside Neymar and Luis Suárez, Messi formed the MSN front three, a combination of technique, movement and ridiculous finishing that ripped through defences across Spain and Europe.

The shirt is pure mid-2010s Barça: wide red and blue stripes, yellow detailing around the collar and Qatar Airways across the front.

On the pitch, the numbers were outrageous.

Messi scored 58 goals in all competitions as Barcelona won La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League, completing the second treble in the club’s history.

There were brilliant moments everywhere, but his Champions League semi-final performance against Bayern Munich summed up the season. First came the finish past Manuel Neuer. Then came the moment that sent Jérôme Boateng backwards before Messi lifted the ball over the goalkeeper.

You know the clip.

You’ve probably watched it more than once.

Paris Saint-Germain 2021/22 Home Shirt (Nike/Jordan)

Messi leaving Barcelona didn’t feel real.

After more than 20 years at the club, financial problems forced an exit in the summer of 2021 and suddenly one of football’s most famous one-club relationships was over.

Then came Paris.

PSG’s 2021/22 home shirt carried the Jordan logo rather than the traditional Nike Swoosh, pairing the club’s dark navy base with red and white detailing. Messi also switched from his familiar No.10 to No.30, the number he had worn at the beginning of his Barcelona career.

His time in France never reached the heights of his Barça years, but that almost makes the shirt more interesting.

It represents the strange bit in the middle. The unexpected chapter between leaving Barcelona and becoming a world champion with Argentina.

For collectors, that matters.

Messi’s career can almost be traced through the shirts alone.

The Barcelona kits from the Guardiola years. The Argentina shirt from the heartbreak of 2014. The MSN era. Paris. And finally, that 2022 World Cup shirt.

Each one takes you back somewhere.

A goal. A final. A trophy lift. A piece of skill that made absolutely no sense the first time you saw it.

That’s why Messi shirts remain so popular with collectors. They aren’t just attached to one of the greatest players football has produced. They’re attached to some of the defining moments of the modern game.
