JACK GRIMSE

AKA @JackGrimse.

CK: Who's your team?

JG: Aston Villa FC - by far the greatest team the world has ever seen! I’m lucky to have made two trips to Villa Park and have been to a few friendlies in the USA as well.

CK: For those reading about you for the first time, can you tell them a bit about yourself?

JG: Over the past decade I’ve expanded my expertise in soccer media and marketing, working in various capacities for broadcasters, publishers, agencies, brands, leagues, clubs and tournaments.

You might have seen my content before on social media - I’m very active and love reviewing football shirts as well as talking about Villa and other happenings across the globe, related to the beautiful game of course.

CK: How did you get into collecting football shirts?

JG: As long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with sports jerseys. And although I haven’t been a football fan my whole life, my collection of football shirts was about a dozen (50% Villa) until a couple of years ago. In 2021 I started producing more content for my own channels and this was a great opportunity to really build my collection, which now includes more than 50 shirts.

"Having been unfamiliar with the sport until the late 2000s, many of the best kits from the past have eluded me. Now, learning about the historical players and teams and the kits they wore is like opening up a time capsule full of treasure."

CK: Tell us about the first football shirt you ever owned.

JG: Aston Villa 2010/11 Away - Young 7 on the back. Little did I know it would become the first shirt in my collection. Having just fallen in love with the sport, Villa and Ashley Young about a year before, I didn’t know much about kits and had no thoughts about starting a collection then. But I couldn’t have started with a better shirt! The checkerboard pattern is outstanding and I’d love to see Villa bring it back. The only area for improvement is if Acorns was the sponsor.

CK: Would you say you have a fascination with kit history?

JG: Most definitely, and it’s still developing. Having been unfamiliar with the sport until the late 2000s, many of the best kits from the past have eluded me. Now, learning about the historical players and teams and the kits they wore is like opening up a time capsule full of treasure.

CK: Do you have a specific era that you like most when it comes to kits?

JG: The 90s. It was the perfect blend of athletic material improving technologically and timeless style. There were so many more companies producing kits too. Classics are still released every year, but things have gotten a little more generic due to improved technology and big business. The oversized style is also better for casual wear compared to some of today’s tight athleisure-esque shirts.

CK: What's your favourite kit in your personal collection?

JG: Is it cheating to say my Aston Villa tracksuits? I love wearing these on matchday, whether at home or to the pub as well as in my videos, and they go with a plain t-shirt or almost any Villa kit.

CK: If you had to pick your top 3 football shirts of all time, what would they be?

JG: Germany 1988-90 Home - timeless, simple, stunning. Aston Villa 2018/19 Home - tastes like promotion! USA 1994 Away - denim and stars!

CK: If you could take one football shirt with you to a desert island, what would it be?

JG: Nigeria 2018 home. It’s striking and the colors are so vibrant, there’s actually a chance it could be spotted from an airplane.

CK: If people want to check out more of your work, where can people find it?

JG: I’m active across TikTok, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram - @JackGrimse on all platforms. Sometimes I brag about work I do for other people on LinkedIn as well.
