INFO - The Faroe Islands' national team initially struggled in international football, often facing heavy defeats against stronger opponents. They were officially recognized as a FIFA member in 1988 and joined UEFA in 1990. Despite being a small nation with a limited player pool, the 4th smallest UEFA country by population.
In the early years, the team participated in regional tournaments such as the Island Games and the Atlantic Cup. In 1990, they achieved their first-ever victory in a competitive match, defeating Austria 1-0 in a UEFA Euro '92 qualifying match.
Since then, the Faroe Islands have continued to improve, earning more victories and draws against higher-ranked teams in UEFA Euro and FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They have also had notable performances in matches, including a winning double over Greece during the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Greece were 18th in the FIFA rankings at the time, whilst the Faroese were placed 187th.
Some of the key players in the history of Faroe Islands national team include the likes of Todi Jónsson, Julian Johnsson, Klæmint Olsen and Fróði Benjaminsen, who have been influential in the team's progress over the years.
