Red, black and unmistakably Milan

AC Milan have spent generations making red and black look ridiculously good.

The Rossoneri stripes have been worn by some of football’s greatest players, from Franco Baresi and Marco van Basten to Paolo Maldini, Kaká and Andriy Shevchenko.

The late 1980s and 90s were particularly special. Milan won back-to-back European Cups under Arrigo Sacchi before Fabio Capello’s side went unbeaten throughout the 1991/92 Serie A season and famously dismantled Barcelona 4–0 in the 1994 European Cup final.

Maldini, Kaká and the adidas years

Maldini links almost every great Milan era.

He debuted in 1985 and retired in 2009, collecting seven Serie A titles and five European Cups and Champions Leagues along the way.

By the 2000s, Milan had built another ridiculous team around Maldini, Nesta, Pirlo, Seedorf, Gattuso, Shevchenko and Kaká. They won the Champions League in 2003 and again in 2007, when Kaká finished a brilliant campaign by lifting the trophy before winning the Ballon d’Or.

Those adidas shirts have become modern classics in their own right.

Milan later returned to the top of Serie A in 2021/22, with Rafael Leão, Theo Hernández and Zlatan Ibrahimović helping deliver a first Scudetto in 11 years.
