30 Years of Shirt: Ian Wright Backs Gillette Petition

Gillette Shirt-Off Petition Campaign - Ian Wright & GilletteLabs BODY + INTIMATE

30 Years of Shirt: Ian Wright backs Gillette petition to scrap yellow cards for shirtless celebrations as goals are moments worth celebrating.

Gillette is calling for the scrapping of one of football’s more debated rules, with the launch of a nationwide campaign, fronted by football legend Ian Wright, to protect what they believe is one of the game's purest expressions of joy.

Launching ahead of the new season, Gillette’s Shirt-Off campaign harnesses the optimism, hope, and excitement that comes with this moment in the football calendar by stripping away a needless rule that dampens the game’s greatest highs.

30 Years of Shirt

For nearly 30 years, players have faced automatic bookings and fines just for showing raw emotion. Whilst IFAB (International Football Association Board) only officially brought the rule into existence (Law 12) in 2004, the first booking took place in a European game on Tyneside in September 1996. But with this campaign, Gillette and Wrighty say ‘bring back the joy’ with the simple philosophy: passion in football - whether at elite or grassroots level (where the same rule is applied) - should be protected, not punished. These moments of unplanned passion are worth celebrating.

But the confidence to actually rip your shirt off, whether on national TV or at grassroots level, doesn't just happen; it can only be built through the right preparation off the pitch.

The new GilletteLabs BODY + INTIMATE range offers Gillette’s safest* body shave, specifically designed for below-the-neck shaving. Armed with the petition and the new range, Gillette aims to give players the instinctive confidence that makes you want to rip your shirt off after netting a goal, and celebrate freely on the pitch.

If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures, Gillette will write an open letter to IFAB (International Football Association Board) formally calling for the rule to be axed.

"Can we get rid of this silly shirt-off rule and give them back a bit of passion and joy?! Sometimes players are getting sent off for two yellow cards when one of them is for taking their shirt off! I hope the fans get behind the petition, help us bring back the joy to goal celebrations.”
