Few clubs have a shirt history quite like Bayern Munich.
Red is the constant, but Bayern have never been afraid to push it. Blue stripes. Gold trim. Black away shirts. Big 90s sponsors. Clean European designs.
And because so many of those shirts were worn during title runs, Champions League nights and dominant Bundesliga seasons, they carry far more than just a good design.
Here are five of the most iconic Bayern Munich shirts of all time.
1. 1990-91 Bayern Munich Home Shirt adidas

Early-90s Bayern. Proper adidas.
The 1990/91 home shirt kept things classic with a deep red base, white three-stripe detailing and the unmistakable Opel sponsor across the chest. It’s simple by modern standards, but that’s exactly why it still works.
This was Bayern in transition, moving into a new decade with players like Lothar Matthäus and Stefan Effenberg helping shape the next generation of the club.
The loose fit, bold sponsor and heavy adidas branding place it firmly in its era.
No need to overcomplicate it.
This is just a great vintage Bayern shirt.
2. 1995-97 Bayern Munich Home Shirt adidas

This one is impossible to miss.
For the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons, adidas brought blue back into Bayern’s home shirt in a big way, combining it with the club’s traditional red to create one of the most distinctive designs of the 90s.
It felt unusual then.
It still does now.
The shirt came during an era featuring names like Mehmet Scholl, Jürgen Klinsmann and a young Oliver Kahn, and it has become a real cult favourite among collectors.
There’s something very mid-90s about it: bold, slightly strange and completely confident.
Exactly how a retro shirt should be.
3. 2000-01 Bayern Munich CL Home Shirt adidas

Some shirts are remembered because they look good.
Others because of what happened in them.
This one has both.
Bayern’s 2000/01 Champions League shirt was clean, sharp and instantly recognisable, with a red base, white collar detail and Opel across the front.
More importantly, it was worn as Bayern finally reclaimed the European Cup.
After the heartbreak of the 1999 final against Manchester United, the club returned two years later and beat Valencia on penalties in Milan to lift the Champions League.
That gives this shirt a different kind of weight.
Oliver Kahn. Stefan Effenberg. Giovane Élber.
A proper European-night Bayern kit.
4. 2012-13 Bayern Munich Home Shirt adidas

This shirt belongs to one of the greatest seasons in Bayern history.
The 2012/13 home kit kept the traditional red but added gold detailing, giving it a slightly more refined look than many of the club’s previous designs.
Then Bayern went and won everything.
Under Jupp Heynckes, they claimed the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League to complete a historic treble.
Arjen Robben scored the winner against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. Franck Ribéry was at his peak. Thomas Müller, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm were all central to a side that simply refused to slow down.
That success turned an already strong shirt into a modern classic.
Red. Gold. Treble.
Hard to argue with that.
5. 2020-21 Bayern Munich Away Shirt adidas

Not every iconic Bayern shirt has to be red.
The 2020/21 away kit went in the opposite direction with a black base, gold detailing and a much more understated look.
It felt sleek. Modern. Slightly different from what people expected from Bayern.
And that’s what made it work.
The design quickly became a favourite with fans, particularly because it arrived during an era when Bayern were one of the strongest sides in Europe.
The black-and-gold combination also gave the shirt a look that worked just as well away from the pitch.
A football shirt with proper crossover appeal.
Bayern Munich Shirts Through the Years
Bayern kits have changed a lot over the decades, but they’ve rarely lost their identity.
The best designs usually do one of two things: lean hard into tradition or break away from it completely.
The 1990/91 shirt is classic Bayern. The 1995/97 design is anything but. The 2000/01 shirt carries European glory, while the 2012/13 kit belongs to a treble-winning side that dominated everything in front of them.
And then there are the curveballs, like the black-and-gold 2020/21 away shirt.
That variety is exactly what makes Bayern shirts so good to collect.
