It’s fair to say over the last few years some truly special pieces have come across our desks. Occasionally though a piece so exceptional comes along that it really takes our breath away. This is one of those, a hand-signed piece from one of our favourite keepers of all time, Jorge Campos.
Jorge Campos was truly a footballing renaissance man. From designing his own, absolutely outrageous, kits to starring for his national side in two world cups, he was truly an icon of Mexican football.
He played for his national team 130 times, the most by any Mexican keeper and was most associated with club side UNAM Pumas. He made his debut with the side in 1988 before ultimately making 274 appearances over three spells. After a string of fantastic performances at USA 94 he became a globally recognised star and two years later transferred to LA Galaxy of the fledgling MLS, still in its first year, where his star power and expressive personality helped establish the league's popularity.
Possibly the most remarkable side to Campos’ game was that if his side were struggling up top he would simply down gloves and get up there himself, often playing as a striker for the last 20 minutes of a game. He scored 14 goals in the Mexican first division in his debut season after being unable to oust first choice goalie Adolfo Rios and even after he had won the starting spot he managed another impressive 30 odd goals in his club career.⠀
And he tackled Messi.
Above all, though, Campos will be best remembered for the kits he donned, sometimes absurd, always impressive. His vibrant personality always shone through in what he wore.
