This change came after a devastating 6-0 loss to Bolton in January. Under Neil's leadership, the team was able to secure a fifth-place finish in League One, which qualified them for the playoffs. In the semi-final rounds, they successfully defeated Sheffield Wednesday with a 2-1 aggregate victory. The team then went on to secure their return to the second tier of English football by defeating Wycombe Wanderers with a 2-0 win in the final. This marked the end of four seasons spent in League One for Sunderland.
